Gokyo offers a genuinely different Everest-region experience from the base camp trail it runs parallel to: rather than following the busy Dudh Kosi valley toward the mountain’s foot, the route branches west after Namche Bazaar into a quieter valley holding a chain of six glacial lakes, the largest high-altitude freshwater lake system on the planet.
The trek’s payoff is Gokyo Ri, a steep climb above the lakeside village that many experienced Khumbu trekkers rate as the single best viewpoint in the entire region — four 8,000m peaks (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu) are visible in one sweep, alongside a view down onto the vast, debris-covered Ngozumpa Glacier.
Because it shares the same approach through Namche Bazaar before diverging, Gokyo can also be combined with a pass crossing (Cho La or Renjo La) to link up with the Everest Base Camp trail for a longer combined itinerary — a popular choice for trekkers with more time who want to see both sides of the Khumbu.
