The hills around Ella and Haputale are Sri Lanka’s most travelled trekking base, and for good reason: this stretch of the Uva highlands packs short, rewarding day hikes into a small area easily reached by the country’s scenic hill railway, without the altitude or distance demands of the Central Highlands further west.

Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak are the region’s best-known walks — the former a genuine, moderately steep climb through tea estates and forest to a viewpoint over the Ella Gap, the latter an easy, family-friendly walk with a disproportionately good payoff for the effort. Further along the ridge, Namunukula’s seven linked peaks offer a longer, quieter alternative for trekkers wanting more elevation gain, while Lipton’s Seat near Haputale — named for the tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton, who is said to have surveyed his estates from the spot — is an easy walk through working tea gardens to one of the region’s widest viewpoints.

Because these routes stay at a moderate elevation and involve modest daily distances, this is the region Tripcamps most often recommends for first-time trekkers or as an easy add-on to a broader Sri Lanka itinerary. The dry season from January to April offers the clearest views, though the region is walkable in some form for most of the year.
