The Sahyadri range — the northern Western Ghats — is a completely different kind of trekking experience from the high Himalaya: shorter trails, lower altitudes, and a landscape of dramatic basalt plateaus and centuries-old hill forts, many built by the Maratha empire. It’s the trekking region most accessible to Mumbai and Pune, making it popular for weekend trips.
Kalsubai, Maharashtra’s highest point, is the marquee trek in the region — a steep but short climb rewarded with a 360-degree view of the surrounding Sahyadri plateau. The monsoon season (June–September) transforms these hills into a deep green landscape with waterfalls along nearly every trail, though trails get slippery; the post-monsoon window (October–February) offers the clearest, driest trekking conditions.
Most Sahyadri treks can be done as a day trip or an overnight, with base villages an easy 3–4 hour drive from either Mumbai or Pune.
