Triund is, for many trekkers, the trail that turns a Dharamshala holiday into a Himalayan trek. The climb from McLeod Ganj — best known as home to the Dalai Lama’s residence and a thriving Tibetan exile community — gains nearly 1,600m of altitude over a manageable 9km, ending on an open grassy ridge that sits face-on with the jagged, often snow-streaked Dhauladhar range.
Because the trail is short, well-marked, and close to a major tourist hub, Triund has become one of the most popular overnight treks in the country — busy on weekends, but still capable of delivering a genuine mountain-camping experience for first-timers, especially if timed for sunrise or sunset at the ridge.
Trekkers wanting a bit more can push on from Triund to the Snowline campsite, adding a couple of hours and a noticeably rockier, higher-altitude stretch of trail before turning back — a good way to extend a short trip without committing to a full multi-day itinerary.
