Bhrigu Lake offers one of the quickest routes from Manali to genuine 4,000m-plus alpine terrain. Named for the sage Bhrigu, who Hindu mythology holds meditated at its shores, the lake sits within a wide bowl of rolling meadow that opens up almost as soon as the trail leaves the forest near Gulaba — a trailhead just 20 minutes’ drive from Manali itself.

The short approach doesn’t mean the trek is trivial: the final push to the lake gains real altitude in a short distance, and weather at 4,300m can shift quickly, with afternoon cloud and even summer snowfall not uncommon. Most itineraries build in a buffer day for exactly this reason.

For trekkers short on time but wanting a real high-altitude lake experience — rather than a lower-altitude meadow or forest trek — Bhrigu Lake is usually the first recommendation in the Manali area, doable comfortably over a long weekend.

Highlights

  • Bhrigu Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake said to be sacred to sage Bhrigu
  • Wide, rolling meadows above the Kullu valley with panoramic mountain views
  • One of the shortest routes in Himachal to a genuine 4,000m+ alpine lake
  • Close proximity to Manali, minimising travel time to the trailhead

Permits & Essentials

No special permit beyond a standard forest entry fee arranged by your operator. Weather at the lake can change quickly even in season — warm layers and rain protection are recommended regardless of forecast.
