Brahmatal sits in Kedarkantha’s shadow in terms of name recognition, but it offers a comparable winter snow-trekking experience with noticeably smaller crowds. The trail climbs from Lohajung through oak and rhododendron forest that fills with snow from December onward, passing the small lake of Bekaltal before reaching Brahmatal itself — a lake that freezes over almost completely for most of the winter season.
The real highlight is the summit ridge above the lake, which opens onto one of the widest mountain panoramas available on a moderate-difficulty trek in the region: Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and the Kedarnath range are all visible in a single sweep on a clear morning.
At six days and a modest 22km round trip, Brahmatal is a good match for trekkers who want a full snow-trek experience — including a summit push and frozen lake camping — without the six-day-plus commitment of longer routes further into the Garhwal.
